Titles on the Line in Knoxville

Knoxville, Tenn. – The top professional wakeboarders from throughout the globe are headed to Volunteer Landing in downtown Knoxville on Aug. 27 & 28 for the final stop of the 2011 MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour. Over the past few months, the sport’s top pros have been competing in a five-city points race for one of the most sought-after trophy in wakeboarding – the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour title.

“We’ve been competing this entire season, waiting to get to Knoxville to see who wins it all,” said current points leader Phillip Soven. “The final stop is always the most exciting contest because it’s everyone’s last shot at winning.”

Soven, 22, of Longwood, Fla., narrowly won the 2010 Pro Tour title by a mere five points after losing to the previous defending champion, Harley Clifford, at last year’s finale in Knoxville.

This season, Soven returns to Volunteer Landing as the top-seeded rider, in hope of winning the fourth overall title of his career – the third most in the Pro Tour’s 20-year history. Only wakeboarding legends Darin Shapiro and Parks Bonifay have more, with six and five titles, respectively.

The only rider that could rival Soven in the point standings for the 2011 Pro Tour title is Harley Clifford, who trails the leader by 45 points.

“Harley [Clifford] and I are both competitors, we’re both hungry to win and we’re both going to throw down for the title in Knoxville,” said Soven. “Harley had a slight setback at the last stop, which gives me a little bit of breathing room in the standings, but I’m not going to let that affect my riding. I’m going for the win.”

During the Pro Tour’s most recent stop in Monroe, Wash., Clifford finished last in the final round of the contest, while Soven ended up winning his third consecutive stop this season. As a result of that placement, there is a 45-point gap in the standings between the two riders.

While Clifford remains in contention for the Pro Tour title, the young Australian phenom is a long-shot to finish first place overall in the standings, as Soven only needs to place seventh or better in Knoxville to secure the title.

“I can only control my riding, so I’m not thinking about the points,” said Clifford. “Regardless where I finish on the Pro Tour, my goal is to win the Knoxville tour stop.”

Clifford’s attitude could pay off for him even if Soven takes home the Pro Tour title, as the former Rookie of the Year winner could still be crowned the King of Wake with a win in Knoxville.

The Knoxville tour stop doubles the final contest in the eight-event King of Wake series, where Clifford can capture his first-ever series crown with a win at Volunteer Landing.

“There’s a lot on the line in Knoxville,” said Clifford.

In addition to the Pro Tour and the King of Wake, the Pro Women’s Queen of Wake series will also crown their winner in Knoxville. Current points leader Rockstar’s Amber Wing is already guaranteed to win the eight-event series crown, but several top contenders will still look to make a splash at the season-ending event, including 2011 world champion Nicola Butler.

The ticketed event opens on Saturday, Aug. 27, with preliminary rounds running from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The ROCKSTAR Big-Air Kicker contest and Overton’s Double Up contest will also take place on Saturday from 5-7 p.m. Sunday’s finale will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All winners will be crowned at the 20th annual Pro Tour Awards Party, held at the Bijou Theatre on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m.

Tickets to the event at Volunteer Landing are available at the gate: $13 (adult); $5 (ages 6-12); free (ages 5 and under); or $7 (adult) if purchased online.

Soven, Wing and Powers Extend Winning-Streaks with Wins in Monroe

Written by: Rockstar Energy Drink

Monroe, Wash. – With the sun shinning bright over a glassy Lake Tye, the top professional wakeboarders in the world took to the water for their final rounds of action at the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour stop in Monroe, Wash. Fans packed the shoreline, as the sport’s top pros battle it out for crucial points toward the season standings at the fourth stop of the five-city circuit.

With the season’s end in site, the two with most to gain or lose from today’s contest was Phillip Soven and Harley Clifford. The two Pro Men’s division riders were separated by a mere 10 points heading in to Monroe tour stop.

Clifford, who needed the win today to overtake Soven in the Pro Tour standings, seemed to send a message to the current points-leader by landing three 900 variation tricks during the semifinals.

“Knowing that Phil and I were 10 points apart really put the pressure on us today,” said Clifford. “But my semifinal run was pretty standard for me and I didn’t want to hold back heading into the finals.”

While Clifford was clearly the semifinal standout, the Australian wakeboarding phenom could not hang on to that kind of momentum in the finals, with Soven taking first place in Monroe, extending the points-leader’s win-streak to three.

“Going into this stop, with only a 10-point lead, I knew I need to be able to handle the pressure and do everything I needed to do to win this contest,” said Soven. “With Harley not doing so well in the finals, I take a 45-point lead heading into the last stop, where I plan to defend my title.”

While Soven took first place today in Monroe, Clifford finished last in the six-man heat, with Aaron Rathy and Andrew Adkison rounding out the top three, respectively.

In addition to winning the Pro Men’s division finals, Phillip Soven also took first place in the Overton’s Double Up Contest, winning the $1,000 prize for landing a massive Nose Crow 540.

Also in the Pro Men’s division, Dean Smith took home the $1,000 prize in the Rockstar Energy Drink Big-Air Kicker Contest with his Hootchie Glide Backside 360.

In the Pro Women’s division, all eyes were on top seed Amber Wing to see if the former world champion could extend her winning-streak to three consecutive Pro Tour stop victories with a win today in Monroe.

While Wing faced off against a talented six-woman final, the 28-year-old Australian’s biggest challenge was staying focused.

“I was super nervous about finals today,” said Wing. “I really want to be the overall winner, and as the season gets closer to the end, the more the pressure builds up.”

But Wing didn’t let the pressure get to her today, landing a clean Whirly Bird, Moby Dick and a massive Scarecrow to take first place in Monroe and extending her streak.

With today’s win, Wing remains at the top of the standings list, with nearly a 100-point lead over the next closest competitor Nicola Butler.

Emily Copeland Durham and Nicola Butler took second and third place, respectively, in today’s contest.

In the Jr. Pro Men’s division, newcomer Gordon Harrison made his finals debut today, facing off against Joshua Twelker, Daniel Powers and current points-leader Shota Tezuka.

While Harrison turned heads by landing a Crow Mobe 540 in his first-ever finals run, all eyes remained on Powers to see if the 17-year-old Orlando, Fla. would stretch his winning-streak to three consecutive Pro Tour stop victories.

While all the Jr. Pro Men riders threw down impressive runs, Powers Heelside 720 off the double up lifted the 2011 Masters champion to his third straight Pro Tour stop victory.

“It feels great,” Powers said about his win today. “It’s cool to be on a winning-streak and I hope to keep it going through the last stop of the season.”

Harrison and Tezuka rounded out the podium, respectively.

With today’s win, Power sits in second place overall in the standings; 17 points shy of Tezuka.

With Monroe wrapped up, the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink will now head to its final stop of the season in Knoxville, Tenn., on August 27 & 28. Additional 2011 Pro Tour venues include Acworth, Ga., Fort Worth, Tex., and Colorado Springs, Colo.

Rockstar’s Amber Wing and Daniel Powers Take Home Wins!

Written by: Rockstar Energy Drink

Upsets Lead to Exciting Final Matchup:

Soven, Wing, Powers Win Colorado Springs Pro Tour Stop

Colorado Springs, Colo. – As the wind died down and the sun came out, so did the fans, as a packed shoreline looked on to watch the world’s best wakeboarders compete in the finals rounds of action at the third stop of the five-city MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink. The sport’s top pros spent their last day in Colorado Springs, Colo., battling it out on the waters of Memorial Park’s Prospect Lake for wins in the Pro Men, Pro Women and Jr. Pro Men’s division.

Over the course of two preliminary rounds, the Pro Men’s division narrowed the field of 20 quarterfinalists down to six final riders, but not without of series of upsets. The surprising outcomes ultimately led to a six-man final that literally hasn’t been seen in years.

While the Pro Men’s finals saw its share of usual suspects, it also featured Shaun Murray and Chad Sharpe, who made their first finals appearance on the Pro Tour since 2003 and 2007, respectively.

“To be in the same final heat with guys like Phillip Soven and Harley [Clifford] is just crazy,” said the 35-year-old Murray. “Most of the guys I used ride with are now gone, so I feel blessed to still be riding at a high level and being a positive influence in the sport.”

Both Murray and Sharpe laid down solid runs to finish fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the six-man heat. However, Harley Clifford and Phillip Soven, the top two seeds in the contest, pushed the limits of the sport to remain in contention for the top spot.

Clifford appeared to be the frontrunner in the finals after landing a Front Mobe 540, but Soven’s Switch Toeside 900 and Whirly Dick helped the defending Pro Tour titlist win his second straight Pro Tour stop of the season.

“This was an awesome final; riding against guys like [Shaun] Murray, who I looked up to growing up, and Chad [Sharpe], who just has so much style,” said Soven. “The finals are so exhausting, so I knew I wanted to take the win on my first run, so I landed the Whirly Dick right out of the gate, and got it going, so I’m pretty happy.”

With today’s win Soven paces the division in the Pro Tour standings with 290 points. Clifford trails close behind with 280 points and Bob Soven rounds out the top three with 215 points.

In addition to making the finals, Chad Sharpe was named the winner of the Rockstar Energy Drink Big-Air Kicker contest. Sharpe won the $1,000 cash prize after landing a massive Indy Glide.

In the Pro Women’s finals, the crowd could not be louder, as Denver native Emily Copeland Durham hit the waters of her home state. The former X Games gold medalist was poised to win, landing an Off-Axis 540, Roll to Blind and a Tootsie Roll in her final run, but ultimately fell short top seed Amber Wing.

“There were about 150 people that I knew who were cheering for me today, so I really felt the love here,” said Copeland Durham. “I may not have won, but I’m still so excited to be able to podium in my home state.”

The 27-year-old Coloradan finished in second place today, with Wing and Melissa Marquardt taking first and third place, respectively.

With her second-place finish in Colorado Springs, Copeland Durham moves to fourth place overall in the Queen of Wake standings, with Wing remaining at the top of the points list.

In the Jr. Pro Men’s division, defending Colorado Springs tour stop winner Daniel Powers returned to the finals today to face off against Kyle Evans, Freddie Wayne and current division points-leader Shota Tezuka.

Despite an impressive run by top-seeded Tezuka, which included a 1080 attempt off the double up, Powers pulled off the upset to repeat at the home of his first-ever Jr. Pro Tour stop win.

“To win two years in a row in Colorado Springs is just unreal,” said Powers. “Shota [Tezuka] and the other guys really pushed me to step up my riding in the finals, and I’m stoked to get my second win on tour this season.”

Powers, 17, of Orlando, Fla. entered Colorado Springs coming off a tour stop win last week in Fort Worth, Tex. With today’s win, Powers sits in second place overall in the standings, with Tezuka remaining in the lead.

With Colorado Springs wrapped up, the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink will now head to the greater Seattle area of Monroe, Wash., on July 8 & 9. Additional 2011 Pro Tour venues include Acworth, Ga., Fort Worth, Tex., and Knoxville, Tenn.

Rockstar’s Amber Wing and Rusty Malinoski Take Home WINS From Ft. Worth!

Written by: Rockstar Energy Drink

Phillip Soven Wins in Fort Worth on 22nd Birthday Wing, Powers Come Up Big in Texas

Fort Worth, Tex. – Despite the blistering 98° weather today, wakeboarding’s top pro riders turned up the heat in Texas to wrap up one of the most exciting stops yet on the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink. The final rounds of action, held on the waters of Texas MasterCraft’s Lake Moser, were filled with upsets that ultimately led to three winners being crowned in Fort Worth.

The Pro Men’s division kicked off the Pro Tour’s last day in Texas with preliminary rounds, narrowing the field of 20 riders down to six for the final rounds of action.

Among the six finalists was defending Pro Tour titlist Phillip Soven, who celebrated his 22nd birthday today. The birthday boy faced off in stacked heat that included his younger brother Bob Soven, current points-leader Harley Clifford, former world champ Rusty Malinoski, world-record holder JD Webb and Canadian rail-master Olivier Derome.

The scorching weather and constant riding fatigued most of the finalist, causing several unfortunate falls. However, top seed, Harley Clifford, managed to put together what appeared to be a winning run, but not before the birthday boy could blow out his candles to narrowly edge out Clifford 95.50 to 95.00.

“This is an awesome birthday present,” Soven joked about his win today. “I worked really hard to win this contest and I’m excited to be leaving Fort Worth with the win.”

Today’s win marks Soven’s second consecutive victory in Fort Worth. Clifford and Rusty Malinoski rounded out the podium, respectively.

Phillip Soven has now twice won a Pro Tour contest on his birthday. The now 22-year-old Florida native captured his first-ever Pro Tour stop win on his 15th birthday in Reno, Nev.

With today’s win, Soven breaks the tie with Harley Clifford in the Pro Tour standings to take the top spot with 190 points.

In the Pro Women’s division, all eyes were on Nicola Butler to see if she could set the record for most consecutive Fort Worth tour stop wins at four during today’s finals. The current world champion was on pace to set the record, but suffered a crucial fall on a Tantrum, giving the edge to Amber Wing, with her stand-up run.

Wing took first place today with a score 66.67, less than seven points more than Butler’s score of 60.00. Melissa Marquardt rounded out the podium in third place.

“I thought Nicola had it; I was cheering for her,” said Wing. “But I did my run, stood up both my passes and came out on top. I’m really pumped to win this tour stop.”

With today’s win, Wing leads the Pro Women’s Queen of Wake point standings with 290 points. Butler and Marquardt also round out the top three in the standings, respectively.

In the Jr. Pro Men’s finals, the division almost saw an exact repeat of the Pro Tour season opener, with Dylan Prideaux, Josh Twelker and Shota Tezuka returning to the last round of action. Rounding out the four-man final was 2010 Jr. Pro Tour runner-up Daniel Powers.

Shota Tezuka, the current points-leader, appeared to have the edge in the competition, but Daniel Powers’s Heelside 720 off the double up helped surge the 2011 Masters winner to the top of the podium, winning his first Pro Tour stop of the season.

“It feels awesome,” Powers commented on his win today. “Coming off a win at the Masters was a good confidence booster for me, especially after what happened in Acworth.”

Tezuka and Twelker rounded out the podium, respectively.

With today’s win, Powers sits in fifth place overall in the Jr. Pro Men’s point standings with 143 points. Tezuka remains the points-leader with 190 points.

Also walking away a winner in Fort Worth today is Thailand’s Padiwat Jaemjan, who won the Rockstar Energy Drink Big-Air Kicker Contest, a $1,000 cash prize, after landing a massive Cab Glide.

With the second stop of the 2011 season all wrapped up, the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink will now head to Colorado Springs, Colo., on June 10 & 11. Additional 2011 Pro Tour venues include Acworth, Ga., Monroe, Wash., and Knoxville, Tenn.

King of Wake Stop #1 Acworth Results – Rockstar’s Amber Wing Takes 2nd!

Written by: Rockstar Energy Drink

Clifford, Marquardt Win Acworth Pro Tour Stop

Tezuka Becomes First Japanese Rider to Win a Pro Tour Event

Acworth, Ga. – Fans packed the shores of Lake Allatoona at Dallas Landing Park today to catch the final rounds of action at the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour stop in Acworth, Ga. The sport’s top pros spent the day battling it out behind the MasterCraft X-Star for wins in the Jr. Pro Men, Pro Women and Pro Men’s divisions.

The Pro Men’s division kicked off the Pro Tour’s last day in Acworth, narrowing the field of 20 riders down to six for the final round of action.

Rookie Steel Lafferty and Seattle’s Nick Jones both made their Pro Men finals debut today against several wakeboarding heavyweights, including former Pro Tour titlist Harley Clifford and reigning champ Phillip Soven.

Both newcomers put up a respectable showing, with Lafferty and Jones finishing in third and fourth place, respectively.

Top seed Phillip Soven appeared to have an edge on the competition in the finals, but ultimately fell short to winner Harley Clifford, who pulled off the upset to take first place in Acworth.

“I’m so stoked to start the season with a win,” said Clifford. “Phil [Soven] is always tough to go up against, but I rode really well today and came out on top.”

Today’s win marks Clifford’s second consecutive victory in Acworth.

Also walking away a winner in Acworth today is current wakeboard world champion Dean Smith. The 26-year-old Australian won the Rockstar Energy Drink Big-Air Kick Contest, a $1,000 cash prize, after landing a massive Hootchie Backside 360.

In the Pro Women’s division, all eyes were on top seed Amber Wing and former Pro Tour titlist Nicola Butler to see who would come out on top in the finals. But neither favorite would take the win in the six-woman final, as California’s Melissa Marquardt pulled off the upset to claim her first Pro Tour stop victory.

“I’m a little shocked, I didn’t expect to win,” said Marquardt. “But now that I have, I’m stoked about it.”

Marquardt, 27, of Canyon Lake, Calif. landed a massive Back Roll to Blind and a Toeside 540 in her final run to post the winning score of 71.67. Wing and Butler rounded out the top three, respectively.

In the Jr. Pro Men’s division, history was made today, as Shota Tezuka became the first Japanese rider ever to win a Pro Tour event. Tezuka, 17, from Gotenba, Japan, blew the competition out of the water in the four-man final, posting a score of 97.00, a 13-point difference from his next closest competitor. Jacob Valdez and Aussie Dylan Prideaux rounded out the Jr. Pro Men’s podium, respectively.

“It feels awesome, I’m very excited,” Tezuka commented on his win today. “I rode really well, had fun and won.”

In addition to winning the Jr. Pro Men’s finals today, Tezuka turned heads in Acworth, beating out Rusty Malinoski and special guest Parks Bonifay in the Overton’s Double Up Contest. Tezuka took home the $1,000 cash prize for landing a massive Heelside Frontside 900 off the double up.

With the first stop of the season all wrapped up, the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink will now head to Fort Worth, Tex., on June 2-4. Additional 2011 Pro Tour venues include Colorado Springs, Colo., Monroe, Wash., and Knoxville, Tenn.

Three New Venues Featured on

2011 King of Wake Schedule

Orlando, Fla. — The King of Wake — the world’s elite pro wakeboarding series — announced today the dates and locations for its 2011 season, with three new venues highlighting its upcoming schedule. The series will make eight stops throughout the United States, beginning in Orlando, Fla. and wrapping up in Knoxville, Tenn.

The 2011 season will open with the Wake Games on April 28-May 1 at the Orlando Watersports Complex in Orlando, Fla. The Wake Games have become a kickoff tradition for the series, opening every King of Wake season since 2007.

The series will then continue the season with four stops on the Pro Wakeboard Tour, including Acworth, Ga., on May 21; Fort Worth, Tex., June 4; Colorado Springs, Colo., June 11 and its newest venue in the greater Seattle area of Monroe, Wash., on July 9. Monroe will mark the first time the King of Wake series has ever been held in the Pacific Northwest and the first time the Pro Tour has been held in Washington state since 1995.

Following Monroe, the King of Wake will make its debut at two more new venues, with WWA National Championships making its first-ever appearance on the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis, Minn., on July 27-31, followed by the WWA World Championships debut at The Precedent in Indianapolis, Ind., on Aug. 18-21.

The King of Wake season will end with the Pro Tour finale at Volunteer Landing in Knoxville, Tenn., on Aug. 27 & 28. Both a Pro Tour and a King of Wake champion will be crowned in Knoxville.

The Chase for the Crown, which limits the King of Wake crown to the top 10 riders in the standings midway through the season, will begin following the Pro Tour’s stop in Monroe. Only the 10 riders involved in the Chase will have their point totals adjusted and have the remaining three stops to top each other in the standings for the overall title.

Last year, Phillip Soven took home the King of Wake crown – his third of his career – after edging out Australian phenom Harley Clifford and younger brother Bob Soven, who finished second and third in the 2010 standing, respectively.

Since its inception in 1994, the ROCKSTAR WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra has attracted more than 1,000 competitors from more than 20 countries. Competitors, ranging from 7 years old to 55 years young, earn their invitation to the WWA Worlds by qualifying at their respective countries’ national championships.

At the WWA Worlds, athletes compete in heats through a series of rounds during the course of the contest. In each heat, competitors perform rail tricks and aerial maneuvers while being pulled along the water by the event’s official towboat, the Supra Launch 242. Tricks are judged by a panel of officials, with only the top-scoring athletes in each heat advancing on to the following round of the contest, until a winner is determined in the finals.

The 2011 ROCKSTAR WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra will feature 23 division categories, separated by age, gender, sport and skill level. The WWA Worlds has also added two new adaptive categories for wake athletes with limb loss and limb difference. The event is highlighted by its top two categories — the Pro Men’s and Pro Women’s divisions.

Last year, Dean Smith became the first Australian native to win the world title in the Pro Men’s division, while British standout Nicola Butler captured her second world title in three years in the Pro Women’s division. Both world champions are expected to compete in the 2011 WWA Worlds to defend their titles.

The action isn’t just on the water — on land, the ROCKSTAR WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra features great food and music; pro athlete autograph signings; chances to win freebies; and shopping at the most cutting-edge stores for water-sports equipment including boats, wakeboards, wakeskates, sunglasses and the latest in wakeboarding and surfing fashions.

The 2011 ROCKSTAR WWA Wakeboard World Championships, presented by Supra is free to the public during its first two days of competition, but switches to a ticketed event beginning Saturday, Aug. 20. Tickets are available at the gate: $13 (adult); $5 (ages 6-12); free (ages 5 and under); or $7 (adult) if purchased online.
